The second grade curriculum is adapted to meet the Core Curriculum State Standards. The training and advancement of good work, study, and organizational habits are part of daily routines to encourage a strong foundation for important lifelong habits.
Religion Character development and morality are also areas of daily focus through all subject areas as the children are prepared for the Sacraments of Penance and First Holy Communion.
Language Arts The Language Arts program focuses on vocabulary and writing development, phonics, spelling, and comprehension. The students are taught to identify the main topic and key details from a story, draw conclusions from inferences, find textual evidence, identify and understand root words, use present and past tense verbs, and use and define words with prefixes and suffixes. Writing is integrated across all subjects.
Math Problem solving skills are incorporated into all subject areas. Math skills which include: regrouping two and three digit numbers for addition and subtraction, fractions, money, time, measurement, and an introduction to multiplication are taught using a variety of methods. These include use of the Smart Board for interactive games and activities, hands on manipulatives, along with paper and pencil tasks.
Science The new Science Studies Weekly program takes students on an adventure into space where they learn about planets and continue their travels to earth to study land formations as part of the Earth Science Unit. The Physical Science portion of the program covers Energy. Students also study Life Science to help them understand the life cycles of plants and animals.
Social Studies Using the Studies Weekly program the students learn about communities, citizenship, and map skills. The lessons then move on to the discovery of America, the first colonies, and the American Indians. The students finish the year learning about inventors. Some time is spent learning about the economy and how to be consumers who can decide on the difference between purchases that are wants and and those that are needs.
