Religion
The 6th grade religion curriculum focuses on the Old Testament. The year begins with a study of the formation of God’s covenant with man. It continues with the building of the covenant nation, a redefining of the covenant people, and ends with a study of the fulfillment of the covenant in Jesus Christ. In addition to the Old Testament studies the liturgical calendar is reviewed. Students learn several traditional Catholic prayers throughout the year.
Language Arts
Using the Common Core Standards as a guideline, the literature-based program integrates reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary in a student-centered learning environment where students analyze text, cite evidence, and respond critically about their learning. They take ownership of their learning through goal-setting, reflection, independent text selection, and activities where they collaborate with their peers.
Math
In Grade 6, students spend instructional time focusing on four critical areas: (1) connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division, and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems; (2) completing understanding division of fractions and extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers; (3) writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations; and (4) developing understanding of statistical thinking. Students practice and extend their skills and knowledge by solving real-world and mathematical problems. The curriculum follows the Common Core Standards for 6th Grade Mathematics. Technology, calculators, and other tools will be used for appropriate concepts.
Science
The Sixth Grade Science Course of Study is Earth Science. Content covered includes the Earth and its resources, resource sustainability and the human impact on it, Earth’s history and the processes and forces that change its shape, the oceans, atmosphere and astronomy. Students use these concepts to understand the complexity and interconnectedness of all of Earth’s processes. Scientific explorations and inquiry based learning are an essential component of the class. Proper laboratory safety and procedures are emphasized. Students utilize the ChromeBooks to access the Science TechBook provided through Discovery Education.
Social Studies
The sixth grade social studies is designed to help students develop an understanding of World History, including the Stone Age, Mesopotamia, Egypt and Kush, the ancient civilizations of India, China, Greece, and Rome, and the Middle Ages. They also explore the origins of many of the world’s religions. In addition, the students study geographical features of the earth, the Five Themes of Geography, and how the geography of an area impacts its history.
